  • Fantasy: MW7 Premier League Team of the Week

first_imgAfter weeks of taking the all too familiar backseat in Fantasy, defenders came roaring back in a big way in round seven of Premier League action. Five of them have made our Team of the Week for the first time since MW1. The position’s lower price makes the points they score all the more valuable so making you sure you have the right players at the back is still one of the best ways to gain ground in your Goal leagues. So, which defenders stood out this week, and who will join them in our Team of the Week? Just keep reading!Goal-Fantasy-Football-registertowin Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! GK: Rui Patrício – Wolverhampton – 1 Game, 6 Saves, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 PointsDEF: Harry Maguire – Leicester City – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 17 PointsNewcastle have hardly been prolific of late, but Maguire’s performance on Saturday was impressive nonetheless. His goal, assist, and clean sheet racked up an impressive 17 points, making him our Goal Fantasy Player of the Week. No defender has more goals than the player affectionately known as “slabhead” and, with a fairly easy schedule until December, few look better options in the short term.DEF: Jonny – Wolverhampton – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Clean Sheet = 14 PointsDEF: Danny Rose – Tottenham -1 Game, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 PointsDanny Rose Tottenham 2018-19DEF: Matt Doherty – Wolverhampton – 1 Game, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 PointsWolves’ have proven to be a sneaky bastion of Fantasy value. The defence especially are starting to rack up points with three of their players (Willy Boly, Jonny, and Doherty) all ranked in the top 15 at their position. The latter has been a threat over the past three weeks with a pair of assists and clean sheets to his name. At the moment, he is literally the best value play as no cheaper player has as many points as Doherty.DEF: Kieran Trippier – Tottenham – 1 Game, 1 Assist, 1 Clean Sheet = 10 PointsMID: Raheem Sterling – Manchester City – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist = 11 PointsHe’s currently top five in points in the Goal game and shows no signs of slowing down soon. Of games he’s played in, he’s blanked just once this season and that kind of reliability is hard to find. The only concern surrounding Sterling is rotation but, since squads lock after line-ups are announced, you can just switch him out if he’s not named in Guardiola’s team that week.MID: Gylfi Sigurdsson – Everton – 1 Game, 2 Goals, 1 Penalty Miss = 11 PointsGylfi SigurdssonMID: Johann Berg Gudmundsson – Burnley – 1 Game, 1 Goal, 1 Assist = 11 PointsMID: Felipe Anderson – West Ham – 1 Game, 1 Goal = 8 PointsFWD: Harry Kane – Tottenham – 1 Game, 2 Goals = 12 GoalsHere’s a ridiculous statistic: Harry Kane has now scored more Premier League goals (4) at Huddersfield’s stadium, than any Huddersfield player. Saturday’s performance also saw him land three shots on target and score two goals, both league bests for MW7. The Tottenham man’s 8.4m price tag is joint highest in the goal game but, if he really has refound his form, it could soon prove more costly to not own him. goal-fantasy-football-banner Check out Goal’s Premier League 2019-20 fantasy football podcast for game tips, debate and rivalries.last_img read more

  • Man City to battle Barca for De Jong & De Ligt

first_imgBarcelona and Manchester City have gone head-to-head in the race to sign Ajax prospect Frenkie De Jong, Goal understands. The two clubs each believe that the other has an advantage when it comes to landing the 21-year-old, who is being chased by Europe’s biggest sides. And the situation is further complicated by a mutual interest in Ajax centre-back Matthijs De Ligt. Article continues below Editors’ Picks Man Utd ready to spend big on Sancho and Haaland in January Who is Marcus Thuram? Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! Barca spent the summer trying to open negotiations with Ajax for De Jong, with Goal having revealed that former technical secretary Robert Fernandez spoke with Ajax director of football Marc Overmars on numerous occasions , but the €30 million (£26.2m/$34.8m) fee on offer was well below the Dutch club’s valuation.De Jong has spoken of his desire to play with Lionel Messi at Camp Nou on several occasions, and sources at Manchester City had been of the belief that the Primera Division champions were in pole position. But senior Barca sources now believe that it is City who have the upper hand thanks to a recent push by sporting director Txiki Begiristain, who has travelled to Amsterdam for talks on several occasions.Barca are resigned to the fact that they would not be able to match City’s financial muscle, although Manchester United’s Paul Pogba does feature as an alternative midfield option. Paris Saint-Germain’s Adrien Rabiot, whose contract is up next summer, is also under consideration. There is a feeling within the Catalan club that City could even try to buy De Jong in January and loan him back to Ajax until the end of the season.Frenkie De Jong NetherlandsDe Jong, for his part, insists he has no plans to leave the Amsterdam club : “For the moment I’m staying at Ajax, at least another year and maybe two or three more, I’m really enjoying it here,” he told Elf Voetbal on Thursday.Yet that public stance is not enough to put off his suitors.City are chasing midfield reinforcements after missing out on top target Jorginho to Chelsea in the summer, and the Premier League champions are also drawing up their plans for next summer’s window. A January move has not been ruled out; last season they moved to bring in a centre-back and a forward to aid their push for honours. The versatile De Jong, who can play in several positions in defence and in midfield, is regarded as a special talent by virtually every leading European club and City do not want to miss their opportunity to sign him.Ajax are hoping to take advantage of the situation to recoup as large a transfer fee as possible.City have also been working on a deal for Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves , although the Midlands club have indicated that they will fight hard to keep the 21-year-old Portugal international, or at least hold out for as close to £100 million as possible. It remains to be seen whether City are ready to buy just one midfielder – an effective replacement for Jorginho – or two. Lyon’s Tanguy Ndombele is another player that City have been watching closely for several months.Matthijs de Ligt Netherlands 2017-18It is believed that City are also ready to move for De Jong’s Netherlands and Ajax team-mate De Ligt. The Blues were heavily linked with a big-money bid for the 19-year-old defender towards the end of last season, but Goal understands that the club were merely laying the groundwork ahead of a move in 2019.Barca are also interested in De Ligt and it has been reported recently that they will now prioritise a move for him over De Jong, partly because they believe City have stolen a march on De Jong, and because they see De Ligt as the next Gerard Pique. As with De Jong, however, Barca would not be able to match the English club’s financial terms if a formal offer is made.last_img read more

  • Man City do not have weaknesses, says Shakhtar boss

first_imgShakhtar Donetsk coach Paulo Fonseca claims that Manchester City ‘do not have weaknesses’ as his side prepare to face the Premier League leaders in the Champions League on Wednesday. The Ukrainian outfit were soundly beaten by Pep Guardiola’s charges in Kharviv two weeks ago, City running out 3-0 winners to claim the title as the only English side to win away to Shakhtar in European competition in the process. And Fonseca, acutely aware of the dangers City pose, knows that his team cannot afford any slip-ups when they meet their opponents at the Etihad. Lilian’s son who is top of the Bundesliga with Borussia Monchengladbach Brazil, beware! Messi and Argentina out for revenge after Copa controversy Best player in MLS? Zlatan wasn’t even the best player in LA! “Manchester City do not have weaknesses,” the Portuguese boss told a press conference. “Playing against Manchester City is always very complicated because they are one of the best teams in the world.“We are going to show our strengths and show you game – we have to make sure we don’t make any mistakes against a team such as City.”Despite October’s defeat to the English champions, Fonseca remains a respected figure in the world of football management, having won successive domestic doubles with Shakhtar. When asked if he would one day take up the opportunity to coach in the Premier League, the 45-year-old was unequivocal.“Of course,” he said. “It’s a dream for every coach – it’s a big league, maybe the best in the world.“I would like to come here one day and manage a team. I don’t know when that will be but I believe that it will happen.”Of course, Fonseca had to reiterate his dedication to his current club.“With regards to the team I would like to manage… I’m currently with Shakhtar. This is the team I want to manage.“My heart and soul are with them but maybe in future I’ll consider managing another team.”last_img read more

  • Mohammad Amir mulls Test retirement to prolong ODI, T20 career

first_imgPakistan’s left-arm pacer Mohammad Amir is considering ending his Test career in order to focus on one-dayers and Twenty20 cricket.According to reports in the Pakistani media, Amir discussed this prospect with his teammates and the management after Pakistan lost the second Test against the West Indies in Barbados.”Amir himself is now upset that how this private discussion came out in the open and who leaked the discussions,” a report said.”The Pakistan Cricket Board and team management in West Indies is now investigating as to who is responsible for leaking out this private discussion,” it said.Reports said that Amir, who has taken 11 wickets in the two Tests in the West Indies, made it clear in the discussions with his teammates and management that he felt that playing Test cricket required a lot more physical fitness and endurance.”He apparently indicated he would like to focus on one- dayers and T20 cricket,” the report said. The 25-year-old Amir tasted his first real success on the tour of the West Indies with 11 wickets but former fast bowling greats like Wasim Akram still feel that the left-armer needs to improve his bowling.Amir, since returning to the Pakistan squad after completing his five-year ban for spot-fixing in early 2015, has played 15 Tests without much success.Amir would not be the first international cricketer to decide to retire from Test cricket to focus on ODI and T20 matches.Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi himself retired from Test cricket in 2010 to just play ODIs and T20 matches.advertisementALSO WATCH:last_img read more

  • Manchester City chairman says Sergio Aguero will stay next season

first_imgStriker Sergio Aguero is among the best players in the world and is staying at Manchester City next season, the Premier League club’s chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak said, dismissing transfer speculation surrounding the Argentine international.Aguero helped City finish third in the league, scoring 20 goals in 31 league appearances, but his starting role came under intense scrutiny following the arrival of in-form Brazilian forward Gabriel Jesus in January. The Brazilian’s impressive start at the club, including two goals and an assist in his first two league starts, helped him oust Aguero as the first-choice striker but the 20-year-old sustained a broken foot and the Argentine reclaimed his spot.”Absolutely. There has never been any doubt about that. I’ve read a lot about the speculation on this and it’s ridiculous,” Emirati Al Mubarak told the club website in his end of season address when asked if Aguero was staying.”Aguero is one of the best players in the world. And we are a team that aspires to win in every competition we compete in…having Sergio Aguero as part of the squad is an absolute must. And it has never been in doubt.”The 28-year-old Aguero, who joined City from Spain’s Atletico Madrid in 2011, has a contract at the Manchester side until 2020. He has won two Premier League titles and two League Cups during his time at the Etihad.last_img read more

  • India needs strong roots to match China, says Pullela Gopichand

first_imgIndia stands on the brink of a badminton revolution but the sport’s foundations need to be strengthened if the country hopes to emulate mighty neighbours China, national coach Pullela Gopichand has told Reuters.China has been the dominant force in badminton for decades but after sweeping all five titles at the 2012 London Olympics, last year’s Rio Games proved far less productive for the Asian super power as other nations sought to take advantage. They bagged the men’s singles and doubles titles but only added a solitary bronze to that tally as India’s Pusarla Sindhu took silver in the women’s singles, losing out to Spain’s Carolina Marin in one of three finals without Chinese players.Sindhu’s silver followed Saina Nehwal’s bronze in London for success-starved India, but Kidambi Srikanth’s three consecutive Super Series finals appearances has given badminton a shot in the arm in the world’s second-most populous country.”For the number of people who have taken up playing the sport, I will say yes,” Gopichand said when asked if India was on the verge of a badminton revolution. “And hopefully these performances are more consistent.”It’s not only my academy, all academies across the country are running full. There are many, many parents who want their kids to give up everything and concentrate on badminton.”Srikanth lost to compatriot B. Sai Praneeth in the final in Singapore before going on to win in Indonesia and Australia, where he beat Chinese Olympic and world champion Chen Long.In Indonesia, HS Prannoy also shone as he defeated three-times Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei and China’s Chen in consecutive rounds before losing in the semi-finals.advertisement”China as a dominant force has been challenged, both in the men’s and women’s. We have been responsible for it,” beamed Gopichand when asked if China’s hegemony was over.”But I think the world championships, the Olympics are the big championships and medals which are critical. When we can beat them at those big events then I feel we can say that.”FITNESS FOCUSAll three men’s players, Nehwal and Sindhu are products of the Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad, where the former All England champion credits a focus on fitness for the success and said many years of hard work was finally bearing fruit.”If we look at the performances in the last few years it has been good,” the 43-year-old said. “We have been able to work better as a unit and all players have been peaking at the right time.”The fitness levels are higher… we were not fit enough to play at the highest level. Technically, we have been good for a long time but in fitness levels, we were lacking.”At grassroots level, badminton was going in a certain direction but to beat them (China) we needed to play in a different style. The kind of badminton we were playing was not in tune with what was needed at the highest level.”India now boasts a larger pool of players poised to succeed at the highest level but Gopichand is not resting on his laurels, yearning for a more robust system and better coaching.Indonesian Mulyo Handoyo, best known for guiding countryman Taufik Hidayat to Olympic gold in 2004, has been added to India’s coaching staff, which Gopichand says has given him more time to focus on the needs of players individually.”Although I am very happy and very satisfied with the performances, I think for us to be sustainable, for us to call ourselves a superpower in badminton there is still a lot of work which needs to be done structurally,” he said.”I think for the next generation to come up, we need to put a system in place which actually identifies and nurtures talent. We have grown exponentially but there is lot more which needs to be done.”It’s quite hard to push a rock up the mountain but if you slip then it slips back very fast.”The stellar results have earned Gopichand the moniker of ‘Super Coach’, hardly surprising considering the amount of work he continues to put in at his academy.”I think it’s a huge responsibility… a coach’s job is tough and in India it is even tougher,” Gopichand added.”It’s been 13 years, regular, disciplined work ethic and very little time off to do anything else. And to work 12-14 hours on most days, stressful days. If I were to call that sacrifice, it is.”But honestly I have loved each part of the journey and never felt it was a sacrifice.”advertisementlast_img read more

  • Alexander Zverev beats Kevin Anderson, wins Citi Open for fourth title of the year

first_imgGerman Alexander Zverev used his dominant serve to claim a fourth ATP title of the year with a commanding 6-4, 6-4 win over South African veteran Kevin Anderson at the Citi Open in Washington on Sunday. The 20-year-old fifth seed made only seven unforced errors and did not face a break point on the super-fast outdoor hardcourt at Rock Creek Park, never giving Anderson a chance to get into the match. One break in each set was enough for Zverev to enhance his burgeoning reputation as one of the game’s rising talents. He closed out the match in just under 70 minutes before accepting the enthusiastic applause from a near capacity crowd that included his parents and his dog.Zverev joined Rafa Nadal as a four-time ATP winner this year. Only Roger Federer, with five, has captured more titles in 2017.Zverev won his fifth career title and improved his career record against Anderson to 3-0.”It was a great match,” said the German, who started the week ranked eighth in the world.”I felt unbelievable starting from the quarter-finals and from then it got better and better every match I played.”The only time Zverev was pushed all week came in the second round, when he edged Australian Jordan Thompson in a third set tiebreak. But he improved as the tournament progressed and a severe case of jet lag subsided, and did not lose another set in his final four matches.Zverev said the next goal in his career was to go deeper into the grand slams.advertisement”I’ve lost in five sets against Rafa, five sets against (Milos) Raonic,” he said.”At some stage I want to win those kind of matches and get further in grand slams.”The best I’ve done is fourth round. I know I still have to improve a lot to be able to go far in the big tournaments.”last_img read more

  • LG V30+ with 6-inch FullVision display, 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC & dual cameras launched at Rs 44,990

first_imgLG finally launched its high-end V30+ flagship phone in India on Wednesday at a price of Rs 44,990. The V30+, which is successor to last year’s audio-centric V20, comes with an unusual 18:9 FullVision display – instead of a regular 16:9. This means that the V30+ is not just an audio-centric phone, it is video-centric as well. Apart from this, the newest flagship also boasts of a dual rear camera setup and 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC as well. The USP of the V30+, according to LG, is its big bezel-less display. The phone comes with ridiculously slim bezels allowing the display to take up over 80 per cent of its front side: a concept also seen in Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 and Apple’s iPhone X. LG has so far stayed clear of using an OLED panel (not strictly though as the forgettable G Flex 2 did house one) but all this changes with the V30+. The V30+ is LG’s first true flagship phone, in a long time, to come with a curved OLED — called Full Vision by the company — display which is also HDR 10-ready. The V30+ is also compatible with Google’s Daydream virtual reality platform. The LG V30+ is launching with Android 7.1.2 Nougat but it’s in line to get Android Oreo in the days to come although there’s still no definite time-line.Specs, features and everything to knowMoving on, the LG V30+ has a 6-inch QHD+ 18:9 Full Vision display with a 2880×1400 pixel resolution, which roughly translates to 538ppi and this when combined with LG’s Android 7.1.2 Nougat-based UX software will allow users to run apps in two perfectly square windows side-by-side. The feature, which seems to be a gradual progression of Android 7.0’s split-screen multitasking capabilities, has been extended to the camera software as well.advertisementSpeaking of the camera, the LG V30+ comes with a dual camera system on the rear, consisting of one 16-megapixel standard angle (f/1.6 aperture) and one 13-megapixel 120 degrees wide angle (f/1.9 aperture) lens. LG is touting the V30+’ rear camera system as the world’s first camera system to ship with an aperture of f/1.6 which should technically entail in outstanding low light photography. In addition, the dual camera system on-board the V30+ uses crystal clear glass lens instead of plastic and that should also aid in better photos, according to LG.A specialised feature of the V30+’ manual mode is Graphy, something that allows users to apply the same ‘style and mood’ of a chosen professional photo to their own. Also Read: LG V30 with 6-inch OLED screen, 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC & dual cameras launched at IFAThe V30+ dual camera system has been built not only to take outstanding still photos, it has also been designed to shoot pro-level videos. The V30+, to begin with, can shoot 4K videos at 30fps in log format. The V30+, in addition, comes with as many as 15 different color grading presets to add a cinematic look to videos, and a specialized mode called Point Zoom that allows zooming into any selected area within the frame while recording. On the front, the V30+ sports a 5-megapixel camera with a “wide” 90-degree field of view and f/2.2 aperture. On the inside, the LG V30+ is powered by a top-of-the-line Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor paired with 4GB of RAM. It comes with 128GB of internal storage which is further expandable via a micro-SD card slot. The phone is backed by a 3,300mAh battery with support for both fast and wireless charging.Unlike its predecessor, the V30+ dumps LG’s trademark secondary ticker screen for a floating bar feature that can be customized to fit up to five apps for easy access. There’s an always-on display feature and a 32-bit Hi-Fi Quad DAC for immersive audio. The V30+ also supports Master Quality Authenticated (MQA) technology for high-resolution audio streaming. On the outside, the V30+ comes with a ‘minimalist’ design consisting of Corning Gorilla Glass 5 (Corning Gorilla Glass 4 on camera) and metal, and a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. Additionally, the V30+ is also dust and water resistant — IP68-certified — as also MIL-STD-810G certified so it can technically survive harsh environment. The V30+, in addition to a fingerprint scanner, also includes facial and voice recognition technology for added security.Price and availabilityThe LG V30+ has been launched in India at a price of Rs 44,990 and will be available for buying in as many as four colours from December 18 exclusively from Amazon India. Pre-booking is now live on the e-retail website. • ESPN Sportscaster Scott Dies at 49

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares Stuart Scott was in his element, working a “Monday Night Football” game, when he was forced to leave for an appendix operation.Doctors discovered a tumor during surgery and Scott was diagnosed with cancer. But he made a point of continuing to live his life — at work and outside of it.“You beat cancer by how you live,” he would later say. “So live. Live. Fight like hell.”That fight ended Sunday when Scott, the longtime “SportsCenter” anchor and ESPN personality known for his enthusiasm and ubiquity, died at age 49.Scott remained dedicated to his craft even as he suffered through chemotherapy, radiation and surgery.ESPN President John Skipper said in a statement that Scott was “a true friend and a uniquely inspirational figure” and that his “energetic and unwavering devotion to his family and to his work while fighting the battle of his life left us in awe, and he leaves a void that can never be replaced.”Skipper also marveled at Scott’s dedication to keep fighting — literally.“Who engages in mixed martial arts training in the midst of chemotherapy treatments?” Skipper said. “Who leaves a hospital procedure to return to the set?”Fans and players at games around the United States on Sunday stopped to observe moments of silence, including at the Bengals-Colts NFL playoff game in Indianapolis, the Mavericks-Cavaliers NBA game in Cleveland and at several college basketball games. Some of the world’s most famous athletes expressed their grief online. LeBron James wrote on Instagram: “Thank you so much for being u and giving us inner city kids someone we could relate to that wasn’t a player but was close enough to them.”“Stuart wasn’t covering heroes & champions, it was the other way around,” Tiger Woods said on Twitter. In July, Scott accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award at the ESPYs. During his speech, he told his teenage daughters: “Taelor and Sydni, I love you guys more than I will ever be able to express. You two are my heartbeat. I am standing on this stage here tonight because of you.”Scott is also survived by his parents, O. Ray and Jacqueline Scott; siblings Stephen Scott, Synthia Kearney and Susan Scott; his daughters Taelor, 19, and Sydni, 15; and girlfriend Kristin Spodobalski. On Sunday morning, NFL Network broadcaster Rich Eisen’s voice broke as he reported the death of his good friend, with whom he worked on “SportsCenter” broadcasts.“I love this man,” Eisen said.ESPN anchor Hannah Storm called him “our colleague, our friend and our inspiration” as she reported the news. On the network’s NFL pregame show, Chris Berman said, “Stuart made ESPN what it is, he made us better people.”Before North Carolina’s women’s basketball team tipped off against N.C. State, the arena observed a moment of silence for Scott, and the videoboard proclaimed the 1987 graduate “Forever a Tar Heel.”Born in Chicago, Scott attended high school in North Carolina before going to UNC. He returned to Chapel Hill as the university’s commencement speaker in 2001.Scott worked at three TV stations in the southern U.S. before joining ESPN for the 1993 launch of its ESPN2 network, hosting short sports update segments. He often anchored the 11 p.m. “SportsCenter,” where he would punctuate highlights with an emphatic “Boo-ya!” or note a slick move as being “as cool as the other side of the pillow.”Scott went on to cover countless major events for the network, including the Super Bowl, NBA Finals, World Series and NCAA basketball tournament. He also interviewed President Barack Obama, joining him for a televised game of one on one.“I will miss Stuart Scott,” Obama said in a statement. “Stu helped usher in a new way to talk about our favorite teams and the day’s best plays. For much of those 20 years, public service and campaigns have kept me from my family — but wherever I went, I could flip on the TV and Stu and his colleagues on “SportsCenter” were there. … Michelle and I offer our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and colleagues.”In July, when he accepted the ESPY award named for former N.C. State coach Jim Valvano, who died of cancer in 1993, Scott shared what he had learned from his struggle: “When you die, that does not mean that you lose to cancer. You beat cancer by how you live, why you live, and the manner in which you live.“So live. Live. Fight like hell.”RICK FREEMAN, AP Sports Writer__AP Sports Writers Rachel Cohen and Aaron Beard contributed to this report.last_img read more

  • Greece Bows To UEFA Pressure

first_imgATHENS — Greece is unlikely to be suspended from international competition after its government pledged to make key changes to a new sports law aimed at fighting violence and match-fixing, UEFA General Secretary Gianni Infantino said April 29.Infantino met with members of the Parliament committee who are debating a soccer anti-violence law that UEFA says interferes with the independence of the sport’s administration. The government’s Deputy Minister for Sport, Stavros Kontonis, and the Chairman of the Greek Football Association, Giorgos Girtzikis, were also present.“I think that the outcome of the meeting was positive (but) we are not there yet,” Infantino said after the talks that lasted more than two hours. “We just have to fine-tune the different articles.”Greece’s top league has been suspended three times this season because of crowd violence and an attack on a senior referee, and a high-level judicial investigation is probing alleged corruption in the sport. The draft law is to be voted on next week, but government officials said they had agreed to delay the debate for two days to allow for further consultations with UEFA.The confrontation and possible suspension – dubbed in the local news media as a “football Grexit” – has added pressure on Greece’s new left-wing government, which is struggling to avoid bankruptcy in troubled negotiations with bailout lenders.“For us it is absolutely essential that the self-governance, the autonomy, of the federation is protected,” Infantino said.“This is a fundamental article for us and the consequence of this being violated would have been — and I use ‘would have been’ — the exclusion of Greek football. I think we will not get there.”Kontonis said the government would make amendments requested to the draft law but remained determined to crack down on violence. The opposition conservatives had initially called for the bill to be withdrawn, but said they were also satisfied with the proposed changes.Olympiacos has already won the Greek league title with 74 points after 32 matches, 12 clear of second-place Panathinaikos with two games remaining. • Rodriguez Hits Tainted 660th

first_imgBOSTON — No. 660 is in the book. Will $6 million get in the bank? That’s the amount in a marketing agreement that the New York Yankees may have to pay Alex Rodriguez for tying Willie Mays’ total of 660 homers, fourth most in major league history. He slugged that on May 1, a no-doubt, tie-breaking, pinch-hit liner over the Green Monster in the eighth inning that lifted the Yankees to a 3-2 win over the Boston Red Sox.But Rodriguez and the Yankees appear to be on opposite sides of the $6 million issue.“I’m so in the moment right now and really grateful and appreciative to be playing baseball,” Rodriguez said. “Those things will take care of themselves”When he and the Yankees negotiated a 10-year, $275 million contract in December 2007, they also signed a separate $30 million marketing agreement. It called for $6 million each for up to five accomplishments, payable within 15 days of designation by the team. The accomplishments were contemplated to be home runs 660, 714, 755, 762 and 763.But the Yankees are considering letting the milestones pass without making a designation. They’d likely say that Rodriguez’s suspension all last season for involvement in the Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug scandal ruins the marketing possibilities for the milestones.A failure to declare a milestone and make a payment likely would trigger a grievance on Rodriguez’s behalf by the Major League Baseball Players Association. Barring a settlement, the case would be heard by an arbitrator.Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said he didn’t think that issue would be a distraction to Rodriguez. “He’s so happy to be playing, I think he’ll block it out,” Girardi said.Rodriguez wasn’t allowed to play last year. He returned primarily as a designated hitter while Chase Headley handled his former spot at third base.“I was in a cave in Miami, serving my time,” Rodriguez said. “I am very thankful to the Yankees and major league baseball for allowing me to play this game.”That’s a more conciliatory tone than he took during his failed fight to overturn his suspension when he angered the Yankees by suing, among others, the team physician for the treatment of a hip injury that resulted in surgery. The lawsuit was eventually dropped. After hitting No. 660, he praised the Yankees, major league baseball, the Red Sox and even their fans, who booed loudly when he came to the plate and as he jogged around the bases, expressionless, after his shot to left.“I usually don’t hear the difference” between boos when he plays on the road in different stadiums, Rodriguez said with a grin, “but that boo was pretty intense. It was pretty passionate.”With one out and the score tied 2-2, Rodriguez hit for Garrett Jones and looked at three straight balls from Junichi Tazawa (0-1). Then the reliever fired a 95 mph fastball right down the middle. Rodriguez didn’t miss.“I hit that one good,” he said.He slapped hands with his first- and third-base coaches as he circled the bases and with on-deck hitter Stephen Drew after crossing the plate. His teammates stayed in the dugout. But when he arrived there many of them, and Girardi, high-fived him. Some enthusiastically slapped his back.“I was hoping he would swing” at the 3-0 pitch, Yankees starter CC Sabathia said. “Everybody was excited.”Until then, Rodriguez had been 1 for 16 as a pinch hitter in his career. That hit was a single. The homer was much bigger. It made a winner of Esmil Rogers (1-1). Andrew Miller earned his ninth save.“Congratulations to Alex Rodriguez on his 660th home run,” Mays said in a statement. “Milestones in baseball are meant to be broken and I wish him continued success throughout his career.”When told of that, Rodriguez appeared emotional and said, “I love Willie. He’s one of my heroes. I’m speechless.”And, of course, his homer won the game. “I’m very excited,” he said. “A year ago today I never thought I’d be hitting home runs and helping the Yankees win. Being in the middle of it is fun again.”_____By Howard Ulman, AP Sports WriterAP Baseball Writer Janie McCauley in San Francisco contributedTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more
