  • Firefox Fission aims to close secretstealing security holes

first_img Share your voice A Firefox Nightly sticker Stephen Shankland/CNET With a Firefox effort called Project Fission, Mozilla is moving ahead this month with a plan to keep a major class of computer attacks at bay.The Spectre and Meltdown attacks, more broadly called side-channel attacks, have been a major issue for the computing industry since they emerged a year ago. Mozilla fixed the immediate security vulnerabilities in Firefox last year, but now with an overhaul called Project Fission, the company hopes to protect the browser from any future Spectre-class variations.Fission has been underway for months. But Mozilla plans to take its first concrete step later this month with a release called Milestone 1, said Nika Layzell, a Firefox platform engineer, in a blog post Monday.”We aim to build a browser which isn’t just secure against known security vulnerabilities, but also has layers of built-in defense against potential future vulnerabilities,” Layzell said. “Fission is a massive project.”Spectre-style attacks can be used to steal highly sensitive data like passwords or encryption keys not just by exploiting web browsers but also processors and operating systems. The computing industry has been scrambling to fundamentally redesign much of its technology as a result. The magnitude of Project Fission shows just how hard it is to take care of the problem.Mozilla isn’t yet ready to say when Fission will be done. But it’ll start shipping its elements in the Firefox Nightly test version of the browser when it’s ready.”Project Fission changes the Firefox browser architecture to make it even more secure and resilient to security vulnerabilities. We are defining early project milestones and sharing them so that people interested in Firefox development can follow along,” the nonprofit said in a statement Tuesday.Following up on Firefox ElectrolysisProject Fission is something of a sequel to Mozilla’s earlier Electrolysis project, which split some parts of Firefox into separate computing processes to improve security and performance. In scientific terms, electrolysis can split molecules into separate atoms, for example turning water into hydrogen and oxygen. But fission splits individual atoms, and as the term suggests, Project Fission involves a lower-level change than Electrolysis.Specifically, Project Fission enables a technology called site isolation that can split even individual websites into separate computing processes. Google already enabled site isolation in its Chrome browser after a years-long research project that turned out to bear fruit when Spectre emerged.More memoryOne drawback of site isolation is that it requires more memory. Mozilla had hoped its Electrolysis plan would offer a memory advantage over Chrome, but the need for site isolation wiped out that expectation. To try to contain browser bloat, though, Mozilla has a related project called Fission Memshrink.”We are working to ensure Firefox users continue to experience best-in-class memory usage and performance,” Mozilla said in a statement Tuesday.Fission won’t arrive in one single update. “Each milestone will contain a collection of new features and improved functionality which brings us incrementally closer to our goal,” Layzell said of the project.First published Feb. 5, 2:23 p.m. PT.Update, 3:40 p.m. PT: Adds further detail from Mozilla.CNET Magazine: Check out a sample of the stories in CNET’s newsstand edition.Taking It to Extremes: Mix insane situations — erupting volcanoes, nuclear meltdowns, 30-foot waves — with everyday tech. • Disney may be trying to buy more of Hulu from ATTs WarnerMedia

first_img Share your voice Now playing: Watch this: Tags Post a comment To understand Hulu’s parentage, prepare yourself for a complicated family tree: Disney, Comcast and 21st Century Fox all held equal shares in Hulu for years, with Time Warner joining the group in 2016 when it bought a 10 percent stake in the streaming service. Since then, AT&T gobbled up Time Warner — the parent company of TV networks like HBO and CNN — and refashioned it as WarnerMedia. That passed Time Warner’s minority stake in Hulu to AT&T. And, again, Disney was already on track to boost its share of Hulu from 30 percent to 60 percent by virtue of its pending deal to buy most of 21st Century Fox.Meanwhile, Comcast was essentially a silent partner in Hulu for many years, as part of an agreement Comcast struck in order to cinch its own deal to take over NBCUniversal back in 2009. That restraint finally lifted last year, allowing Comcast to take a more active role in Hulu’s direction. So, yeah, it’s complicated. But Disney’s potential interest in further control over Hulu, one of the most popular streaming services in the US, reiterates the company’s newfound desire to become a force in subscription online video. Disney CEO Bob Iger has called the Disney+ service the company’s “biggest priority” for 2019, and Disney plans to make Hulu its online homebase for edgier, more adult-oriented programming.  1:50 Hulu is owned by Disney, Comcast, Fox and AT&T.  Sarah Tew/CNET Disney may be angling for even more control of Hulu. Disney is holding talks with AT&T to buy the 10 percent stake in the streaming service that the carrier holds through its WarnerMedia unit, according to a report by Variety, citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the discussions. That raises the potential of Disney controlling 70 percent of Hulu, up from its current 30 percent stake, and it would leave Comcast as the only other owner. AT&T, Hulu and WarnerMedia declined to comment, and Disney didn’t respond to requests for comment. The report comes as Disney is on a path toward streaming as a central focus of its business. The company is poised to take over 21st Century Fox, a move meant to gird Disney for battle against deep-pocketed tech competitors pouring money into TV and movies, like Netflix, Amazon and even Apple. That Fox deal would essentially double Disney’s share of Hulu to 60 percent. Meanwhile, Disney is preparing to launch its own streaming video service to rival Netflix. Called Disney+, it’ll include new original series from its Star Wars and Marvel franchises, as well as access to Disney’s deep back catalog.  Disney doubles down on VR entertainment TV and Movies Digital Media 0 Disney AT&T Hululast_img read more

  • Toyota Panasonic will make a new joint venture focusing on smart cities

first_img More From Roadshow Panasonic Toyota,Enlarge ImageIt’s all in a day’s work for the Jeep Cherokee, the most American-made car in 2019. Jeep With high trade tensions looming and increasing talk of tariffs, more and more consumers are looking to buy American. Cars.com has released its annual American Made Index, showcasing companies that use the most American-sourced parts and labor in their vehicles. The results may surprise you.Cars.com analyzed more than 100 US-built vehicles for five key data points: manufacturing location, parts sourcing, US employment, engine sourcing and transmission sourcing. You might think something like the Ford F-150 would top the list, but it drops from its No. 5 spot for 2018 and out of the top 10 completely. Even the first-place holder, the Jeep Cherokee, is a pretty global product. It’s a Jeep, sure, but that brand is part of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, an Italian-owned business.Cars.com surveyed 1,000 people and found that half are concerned about automotive import tariffs, with 41% saying they are unsure if tariffs would make them more likely to buy American. Either way, we’re big fans of all the vehicles on this list. These days, buying American doesn’t necessarily mean sticking with a US-based automaker. Tags Acura MDXMoving up one slot to sixth place on the American Made Index is the non-hybrid variant of the Acura MDX. With its SH-AWD system, the MDX is one of the better handling midsize luxury crossovers, and for 2019 the company gives us the A-Spec treatment with a new front fascia and side skirts, 20-inch wheels, wider exhaust tips, unique gauges, a new steering wheel, carbon fiber trim and various Alcantara interior touches. However, both the standard and A-Spec models get a 3.5-liter V6 engine, rated for 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque going through a nine-speed automatic transmission. It’s also built in Wentzville, Missouri. 52 Photos Chevrolet ColoradoMaking its debut in the top 10 is the Chevrolet Colorado. Shown here in the tough ZR2 Bison off-road spec, the Chevy Colorado is an excellent truck and one of the two midsize pickups you can get with a diesel engine. Adding to the ZR2’s two-inch lift and front and rear locking differentials, the Bison gets beefier skid plates (trust me, that’s a good thing), steel bumpers and integrated recovery points. Heck, you can even get a snorkel.Base models get a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine with a six-speed manual transmission, but a more popular choice is the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine with 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Meanwhile, the 2.8-liter diesel pumps out 186 horsepower and a delicious 369 pound-feet of twist and is mated to a six-speed automatic. The Chevy Colorado is built in Wentzville, Missouri. Post a comment Jeep CherokeeKeeping its top-of-the-list placement, the Jeep Cherokee is 2019’s most American-made car. Refreshed for 2019, the compact crossover now features more tech, better cargo space and a slightly tweaked look. It’s available in no fewer the nine trims, including the off-road specific Trailhawk and a fancy-pants Trailhawk Elite. For 2019, the Cherokee gets a new 2.0-liter, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with 270 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, though naturally aspirated I4 and V6 choices are also available. Regardless of engine, a nine-speed automatic transmission gets the power to the pavement — or dirt as the case may be. While we’ve all been ogling the new mid-engine Corvette, it’s easy to forget what a performance bargain the current-generation ‘Vette is. From the base trim to the Grand Sport to the bonkers ZR1, the Corvette is an American icon.My preference is for the Grand Sport, which strikes a perfect balance between everyday drivability and canyon-carving performance. The 6.2-liter V8 puts out 460 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque. You can get it with a seven-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission, but the kicker is the borrowed chassis and aero parts from the beefier Z06. Like I said, perfect balance. The Corvette is made in Bowling Green, Kentucky. 2019 Acura MDX adds new features and an A-Spec model 69 Photos Honda PilotDropping down to seventh place for 2019 is the Honda Pilot. Like its two-row Passport sibling, the three-row Pilot offers parent-focused technology like Cabin Talk as well as myriad standard driver-assistance features through the Honda Sensing tech suite. Honda’s largest crossover offers up nearly 84 cubic feet of cargo space. Honda’s 3.5-liter V6 engine shows up again, making a serviceable 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Touring and Elite trims get a nine-speed automatic transmission while lower trims have to make do with a six-speed auto. The Honda Pilot is made in Lincoln, Alabama. Honda PassportThe Honda Passport is a new (well, reborn) entry to both the Honda lineup and the American Made Index. This midsize crossover comes to the fray with great driving dynamics and plenty of tech like the standard Honda Sensing suite of active safety features. An available 8-inch touchscreen gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as well as a Wi-Fi hotspot.Under the hood is the stalwart 3.5-liter V6 producing 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. However unlike the Ridgeline, the Passport sends that power through a nine-speed automatic transmission. Having said that, just like the Ridgeline, this is the only powertrain available. The Honda Passport is built in Lincoln, Alabama. Tags Enlarge ImageThese days, trying to do everything as a single company is an exercise in throwing away money. Why not bring in a partner with both expertise and additional sources of funding? Toyota Toyota and Panasonic are far from strange bedfellows, and a new partnership will see each company rely on their specific strengths to integrate mobility into the idea of a connected city. The two companies announced on Thursday that they will establish a new joint venture focused on the idea of “smart cities,” areas that focus on connectivity, from appliances all the way to mobility. The ideas are still in elevator-pitch form for now, but as the partnership progresses, we’ll get a better idea of what these two are actually up to.”Toyota has been leading the mobility field, and Panasonic has long been serving lifestyle needs of people,” said Kazuhiro Tsuga, president of Panasonic, in a statement. “We will put our respective strengths together to offer new value in everyday life. Through this collaboration, Panasonic will further challenge itself to continue advancement in the town development business, aiming to deliver the ‘ideal lifestyle’ for each customer.”Personalization of services is a big component of connectivity. With just about everything commanding its own connection to the internet these days, including vehicles, the ability to link everything up to tailor life to a person’s specific wants and needs isn’t just a pipe dream. It’s not just about selling cars or IoT devices, it’s about making all that stuff work in conjunction. Earlier this year, Toyota and Panasonic announced that the two companies would work together to research, develop, manufacture and sell prismatic cells for EV batteries, an effort that will kick off in 2020. In addition to traditional lithium-ion batteries, the two will also work on solid-state batteries, a nascent tech that could provide some big benefits to EVs in terms of safety, energy density and charging times. Honda OdysseyThe feature-rich Honda Odyssey minivan also retains its number-two slot from last year’s list. While the 2019 model doesn’t see any changes from last, it’s still a darn good choice for families on the go with reconfigurable seats, Wi-Fi and an excellent rear-seat entertainment system. The Cabin Watch video system lets parents keep an eye on their little darlings without turning around in their seats, while Cabin Talk amplifies their voice so no yelling is required. The Odyssey is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 rated for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. Most trims get a nine-speed automatic but the top Touring and Elite trims now use a 10-speed automatic with stop-start technology. The Honda Odyssey is made in Lincoln, Alabama. 68 Photos Honda RidgelineAgain keeping the status quo, the Honda Ridgeline maintains third place on the American Made Index. This crossover-that-looks-like-a-truck provides a better ride than a traditional pickup and gets an awesome lockable trunk right in the floor of the bed. And it doesn’t do the truck stuff too badly, either, as it’s able to carry 1,860 pounds of payload and tow 3,500 pounds. The Ridgeline is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 280 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque. • Digital broadcast laws to be scrapped if BNP returns to power Moudud

first_imgBNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed. — File photoSenior BNP leader Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said the party will repeal the ‘Digital Security Act’ and approved the ‘Broadcast Bill’ within a week, if it is voted to power, to ensure press freedom.”These two laws have been enacted so that our newspapers and media can’t present news independently. Their (journalists’) hand and legs are tied and their voice gagged while the freedom of speech is snatched through the laws,” he said.UNB reports, speaking at a human chain programme, the BNP leader further said, “I would like to say these two laws will be revoked within seven days if we return to power.”Jatiyatabadi Mohila Dal organised the programme in front of the Jatiya Press Club demanding the withdrawal of ‘dictated’ verdicts against BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman in August-21 grenade attack cases. On Monday, the cabinet approved in principle the draft Broadcast Bill 2018.Under the bill, if anyone broadcasts false or confusing information in a discussion programme or anything against the spirit and principles of the Liberation War or against the state policy, he or she will face a maximum jail term of three years or a fine of Tk 5 crore, or both.On 8 October, president Abdul Hamid signed the Digital Security Bill turning it into a law.Moudud, a BNP standing committee member, said the entire nation is now united under the banner of Jatiya Oikyafront as it was formed as per the desires of people of all walks of life.He said the ruling party leaders’ unguarded comments against the Jatiya Oikyafront have demonstrated that BNP’s decision of forging the unity is right one.”We’ll intensify our unity further and ensure our leader (Khaleda’s) release and force the government to hold the election under a neutral administration through it,” he said. The BNP leader warned the government that it will not be allowed to hold another unilateral election like that the 2014 one.He criticised the government for denying Oikyafront permission to hold its maiden rally in Sylhet on October 23. “A party (Jatiya Party) is holding a rally today (Saturday) with much enthusiasm without any obstruction. They allow all, except us, to hold rallies as it’s a fascist and autocratic regime. It fears people and doesn’t believe in the rule of law.”Claiming that Tarique was convicted in August-21 cases ‘unlawfully’ out of political vengeance, Moudud said people do not accept such ‘dictated’ verdicts. He said Tarique will appeal in the High Court against the verdicts once he returns home. “He’ll prove wrong the verdicts given against him. I believe he’ll be acquitted from the High Court through the appeal.”last_img read more
