  • National body to tackle gender violence

first_img11 December 2012 South Africa brought its 16 Days of Activism campaign to a close on Monday with the launch of the National Council Against Gender-Based Violence, a 20-member body that will co-ordinate the country’s bid to end all forms of violence against women and children. The 20-member council was launched by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe at the closing event of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign in Rustenburg, North West province on Monday. The council will facilitate the provision of help and response to victims and survivors of gender-based violence, adopt comprehensive measures to address violence against women and children, and coordinate the 365 Days National Plan of Action against Gender-Based Violence. The council will be chaired by the Deputy President, with a dedicated secretariat located in the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities. The establishment of the council was a major step that put South Africa on the right track to ending all forms of violence against women and children, said council member Advocate Pheagane Solomon Moreroa. “The council is specifically going to look into those issues relating to the violation of women and children rights and come up with relevant activities throughout the year. “We will also be able to implement those programmes supporting women and children who are being tortured and whose rights are being violated on a daily basis,” Moreroa said. “We are appealing to South Africans to work with us. This council will not achieve its objective without the support of society. “We also want to appeal to young South Africans to focus on their education and refrain from engaging on drug and alcohol abuse.” Motlanthe said the high rates of gender-based violence in South Africa were a clear indication that more needed to be done. He said every incident of abuse suffered by a woman or a child reflected the nation’s failure to respond to the cries of the vulnerable. Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more

  • How to Take Photos with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

first_imgWhile the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K won’t replace your go-to still camera, it can capture stills to make referencing and scouting much easier.Ever since the T2i, I’ve been writing tips and producing video tutorials on how to take a camera primarily made for capturing stills and using it to create the “cinematic” look in its video mode. And now, here we are taking a pocket camera that has been made for cinema, and looking at how to use it to capture stills (cue Inception music). This notion isn’t new. Back in 2009, two years after the release of the RED ONE, the camera captured a cover photo of Megan Fox for Esquire magazine. It’s interesting to read the take on the experience of the shoot, as a decade later, it reads like a lost relic:For the first time in Esquire‘s history (and, we imagine, magazine history in general), a cover image was shot as a video. Using the RED ONE, a video camera that captures images at four times the resolution of high-definition, photographer-director Greg Williams (see below) recorded ten minutes of loosely scripted footage with Fox . . . ‘She could run scenes, without being reminded by the sound of a shutter every four seconds that I was taking a picture. As in still photography, a lot of it is capturing unexpected moments. This takes that one step further.’The Pocket 4K has been rolling into new users’ hands over the last few weeks, and more filmmakers are looking to get the most out of the camera. While the camera only houses an eight-megapixel sensor, and doesn’t have the typical photo features found on a mirrorless/DSLR-turned-film camera, we can get stills if necessary, and the 4K resolution provides more than enough for quick reference snaps. There are two ways of doing so.Using the Still ButtonOn the top panel, situated next to the red record button, there’s a camera icon button, which you use to capture a still. However, unlike a typical shutter release button — which will capture images continuously until you lift your finger from the button — this will only take the one still image, then you’ll need to press the button again. When pressed, it’s not initially apparent that you may have taken a photograph. There’s no digital shutter sound, no beep, nor does the screen blink. Instead, you’ll see this small camera icon appear in the top-right of the LCD screen after pressing the camera still button. It’s not that obvious — even less so in bright conditions. To make matters even more confusing — or perhaps more beneficial to those filming who don’t want to view stills when browsing their takes — is that when browsing your media on the camera through the playback function, you can’t review your photos. Again, a stills camera this is not, but one would hope it’d be a feature, considering we have a stills button. Even if we had to go into the menu subsystem to find a separate stills folder to review the media, it’d be better than nothing.Upon hitting the stills button, a still (formatted at your current camera setting) will save as a single DNG frame in a new submenu on your card, aptly titled “Stills.” And, cleverly, the stills get renamed with new characters to avoid unnecessary imports when you’re just looking for video files. As with the GH5, for example, if you were to record video, it’d be titled P1040598, and then if you were to take a photo the second after, the photo would be titled P1040599. With the Pocket 4K, stills will continue to follow the naming conventions set on the Pocket 4K, but they will send with S001 and so forth. An alternative method, and one we’ve extensively covered in a previous article for Resolve, is to frame-grab a 4K still from your NLE. It’s the method behind the Megan Fox cover issue, and it’s the method I used to create the poster below. However, whether you choose to capture a still from the camera using the dedicated button or from a frame grab, you’re still limited in how you capture photographs. The camera, at default, is set to shutter angle, the primary shutter setting for cinema cameras. Why is this such a significant factor? Well, typically the shutter speed is the principle setting that controls how long the image is exposed to light, and it will affect the degree of blur. In cinema, the slight amount of blur we get from 24fps at 180-degree shutter is responsible for what many call the “film look” and is a staple of how we perceive cinematic images. The problem is, it’s not great for taking photographs, because even the slightest movement is going to result in a blurry image. To adjust this, we can enter the setup menu and switch the shutter measurement from shutter angle to shutter speed. This will present us to change the shutter measurement to a setting more familiarly found on DSLRs. It allows us to adjust the shutter speed from 1/24 to 1/2000.If you don’t want to continue switching between shutter measurements in the heat of the moment, you can follow the steps below to try and neutralize any motion blur.We want to change the shutter angle to 45-degrees, negating most of the blur from a moving subject (this really only pertains to frame grabs from a video file), and we want to increase the FPS to 60. In doing so, there will be more frames for any given movement, which again will further negate the motion blur with the 45-degree shutter angle. This will help you pluck a still image from your video file.A reference image captured on the BMPCC4K while location scouting.Truthfully, this camera was never designed for stills, and you shouldn’t treat it as such. Since the files are saved on a Cinema DNG frame, you can export the photo to grade quickly or to grab a reference frame when scouting without the burden of a huge video file. Don’t list your stills camera on eBay just yet — there’s still use for it.Cover image via Blackmagic.Looking for more articles on video gear? • NDA will get three-fourth majority in Maharashtra assembly polls, says Amit Shah

first_imgVisiting Mumbai, a day after announcement of Assembly polls in Maharashtra, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Sunday chose not to meet Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray maintaining secrecy over whether or not both parties will contest the election as an alliance.Addressing a public rally in Goregaon, Mr. Shah announced that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis would continue at the post even after the polls. The BJP president went on to say that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) would get three-fourth majority in the Assembly of 288 seats. While his reference to the NDA has sent mix signals, Mr. Shah did not mention Shiv Sena in his speech. This is being viewed as a snub to the Sena which is projecting Aaditya Thackeray, son of party chief Uddhav Thackeray, as its nominee for the CM’s post.“The Fadnavis government worked alongside Narendra Modi government at the Centre. The Modi government got a second term and I am clear voters have made up their minds to give Fadnavis another term,” Mr. Shah said. However, throughout the day Mr. Shah did not hold any political meeting either with the BJP leaders or with Mr. Thackeray, as speculated. It was widely believed that the meeting between both the leaders would iron out any wrinkles in their partnership and an alliance between two parties would be finalised. The Sena chief has already said that he is hopeful of an alliance with the BJP while Mr. Fadnavis too has said that both parties will contest as part of a coalition. Mr. Thackeray has also said that the seat-sharing formula for the Assembly polls was decided by himself, Mr. Fadnavis and Mr. Shah before Lok Sabha polls. Sena’s Rajya Sabha MP Anil Desai on Friday said that the Sena would accept the number of seats given to it by the BJP.Intense speculation is continuing on the number of seats each part would contest, with the latest version being BJP would contest 162 seats with Sena contesting on 126. The smaller parties would be accommodated from BJP’s quota.Senior Sena leader Divakar Raote had said that party expects 50:50 seat sharing formula and failing to do so would result in the breaking of the alliance. The BJP however has retorted by saying those not part of the seat-sharing talks should not get involved.last_img read more

The difference between the two sides was they put their opportunities away and we didn’t.“We were good in the first half and they scored against the run of play. Following a visit to New Orleans in November 2005, U2’s The Edge announced the unveiling of Music Rising, a campaign to raise funds to replace the lost instruments and accessories of the musicians affected by the hurricanes that devastated the Gulf Coast region.

  • Fasting Elder Robinson grapples with swirling emotions as RCMP investigates nephews murder

first_imgBy Jorge Barrera APTN National NewsElder Raymond Robinson, who has been fasting with Attawapiskat Chief Theresa Spence, lay on the floor of an Ottawa hotel room Sunday and wept after hearing the news his nephew was dead.Manitoba RCMP investigators are treating Austin Troy Hunter Monias’ death as a murder. The 19 year-old was pronounced dead-on-arrival at the Cross Lake, Man., nursing station on Sunday morning. Monias was rushed there by ambulance from a house party, according to Cross Lake First Nation Chief Garrison Settee.Once he heard the news, Robinson said he needed to seek solitude away from the constant bustle of Spence’s camp, which sits on Victoria Island.“I needed to spend some time in solitude just to reflect, just to take time to myself, to think things out, to ensure that I have everything in perspective, that I collect myself again,” said Robinson Monday, day 41 of his fast. “And I did break down there. I was on the floor. I needed to be alone to do that.”Robinson, along with Spence, has been fasting to force a meeting between Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Gov. Gen. David Johnston and First Nations leaders. Spence began her fast on Dec. 11 and Robinson on Dec. 12. He has been on the island since Jan. 1.Robinson said was torn between the need to continue his fast or head back home to be with his devastated family. After a while, he also sat on a chair and stared out the hotel room window struggling with his heaving emotions.“I was just trying to come to grips with what is happening back home and hoping that everybody will understand that if I am unable to go, they will understand. But it’s hard, my emotions are still so mixed, whether I need to be home or whether I need to be here. So I am praying for that. We will see what happens,” said Robinson, inside a wood stove-heated canvas tent which sits next to Spence’s teepee. But, after speaking with Monias’ father, Robinson said he would stick to the fast for now.“I have to. I have to continue even more now, (I am) more determined,” said Robinson.Responding to Robinson and Spence’s continued fast, Manitoba chiefs last Friday called on the prime minister and the governor general to meet with chiefs on Jan. 24.Robinson said this was the second death in the family in the past three weeks. An aunt also recently died.“It is hard to put into words, what I am going through emotionally. Spiritually, I am okay,” said Robinson. “I am a firm believer in the creator and I know my nephew Austin is in good hands.”Robinson’s son Tyler Robinson, 28, said his cousin’s death was no accident and a product of intense internal rivalries within Cross Lake based on where people live and their last name.“You can’t go to a different place on the reserve, (if) you’re from a different area you will get attacked for just being somewhere else…just because of which area you are from and especially what your last name is too,” said Tyler, who was sitting on a bed next to his father.“Us Robinsons are not liked back home.”Tyler, a community youth leader, said his cousin was just standing up for himself.“He was getting picked on and he stood up for himself, but there was a lot of them…I don’t know how many there, he had two other cousins there helping him,” he said. “He didn’t deserve to go that way…let alone from our own people fighting against each other back home.”The Manitoba RCMP said in a statement that investigators are treating the death as a murder and the force flew in additional resources to assist local officers including members of the force’s serious crime unit and a forensics team out of Thompson, Man.“I know there is a death in Cross Lake that we are investigating and we have units on the ground,” said Sgt. Line Karpish. The RCMP also arrested four people in relation to the incident, but released them without charges, the statement said. Monias was found in a residence with “life threatening injuries” at about 6 a.m.Tyler Robinson’s brother, Baptiste Robinson, 21, said he found out about the death over Facebook.“It is rough hearing about stuff like this through Facebook,” said Baptiste. “People have no respect for others that don’t know.”Baptiste said his cousin, who also played hockey, was actively trying to become a youth leader in the community.“He was really talented and really outspoken, outgoing, everyone back home knew he was a nice guy,” said Robinson. On Jan. 11, which was a day Idle No More protests again swept the country to coincide with Atleo’s meeting with the prime minister, Monias spoke at a rally in Cross Lake held in support of Robinson and Spence’s fast.“He was one of the key speakers for the youth and he stood up and spoke for the youth,” said Baptiste.Baptiste said he was chatting with Monias only a few nights ago about bringing all the youth in the community together.“Most of the time the chief and councils, they don’t let us youth talk, they think so little of us…they don’t know nothing because they never let us speak and that is what brings us down,” said Baptiste. “Us youth back home, they don’t let our voices be heard and some of the youth think that it’s the only place they’ll ever live, they’ll ever see, but the world is way bigger.”Elder Robinson said there is very little for youth to do in Cross Lake and they often end up consuming alcohol and drugs.“It ticks me, it ticks me we are losing so many youth. We have to get something for them, something they can enjoy and something they can do away from alcohol, away from drugs,” he said.Monias always called Robinson “uncle” and wanted to follow in his footsteps and become a leader.“He told me he wanted to be like me, that I did a lot for our people,” said Robinson. “I always told him you can only be you, you can never be me, you have to find your own groove, your own journey, what the creator is calling you to. He said, ‘yeah I know, I know.’He wanted to better himself, he wanted to finish his education…he wanted to pursue a political career…I told him once that I am retiring, I think it is time to hang up my hat. He said, ‘Don’t worry uncle, I will pick up the torch, I will get my education.’”At one point in the interview, sadness rises like a slow tide to the rims of Robinson’s eyes. He pauses. Gathers himself.“It is not easy talking like this,” he said. “Knowing he is not here in a physical sense anymore.”[email protected]@JorgeBarreralast_img read more

  • Lakers Lock Up Andrew Bynum For Another Year

It was a year of significant improvement for the Los Angeles Lakers’ Andrew Bynum. The 7-foot center stayed healthy, for one, and he used his court time to blossom into arguably the best center in the NBA. At the very least, he has challenged Orlando’s Dwight Howard for that title.Such improvement has its rewards. For Bynum, it was a $16.1 million option the Lakers picked up for next season, according to the Los Angeles Times.Bynum, 24, was at times mentioned in trade discussions, but stuck around to play 60 games this season of the lockout-shortened season for the Lakers, averaging 18.7 points and 11.8 rebounds with 1.9 blocks. His scoring and rebounding totals were the highs of his career. His play was at times offset by unorthodox comments and moments where he did not appear to extend maximum effort. But his youth and talent trump his youth indiscretions — for now, anyway. read more
