The meeting will bring together internationally renowned academic and industry experts to facilitate new research and education programs and to provide a forum for presenting state-of-the-art research related to the hybrid systems modeling and simulation, validated numerics and formal semantics.“There is a pervasive need in industry for methods that can simultaneously model both continuous and discrete behaviors, particularly in situations where there is uncertainty around some model parameters,” said meeting chair Walid Taha, a computer science professor who holds joint appointments at Sweden’s Halmstad University, Rice University and University of Houston. “These are the most challenging features of cyber-physical systems. The technologies being developed by this research community precisely address these challenges and are already beginning to have a profound impact on how we teach and practice science and engineering.”Who: Speakers will include Aaron Ames, Texas A&M University; Molham Aref, LogicBlox; Ferenc Bartha, Rice University; Albert Cheng, University of Houston; Jyotirmoy Deshmukh, Toyota; Franz Franchetti, Carnegie Mellon University; Walid Gomaa, Egypt Japan University of Science and Technology; Gopal Gupta, University of Texas at Dallas; Vlad Kreinovich, University of Texas at El Paso; Eugenio Moggi, University of Genoa; Roland Philippsen and Gabor Simko, both of Google; Sriram Sankaranarayanan, University of Colorado; and Taha. For the complete schedule, see:www.effective-modeling.org/2015/04/hybrid-modeling-languages-hyml-rice-may_26.html. What:      Hybrid Modeling Languages (HyML) @ Rice meeting. When:      May 7-8.Where:     Duncan Hall, Room 1070, Rice University, 6100 Main St.Members of the news media who want to attend should RSVP to Jade Boyd, associate director of news and media relations at Rice, at [email protected] or 713-348-6778.For a map of Rice University’s campus, go to www.rice.edu/maps/maps.html.-30-Related materials:www.effective-modeling.org/2015/04/hybrid-modeling-languages-hyml-rice-may.htmlThis media advisory can be found online at news-network.rice.edu/news.Follow Rice News and Media Relations via Twitter @RiceUNewsLocated on a 300-acre forested campus in Houston, Rice University is consistently ranked among the nation’s top 20 universities by U.S. News & World Report. Rice has highly respected schools of Architecture, Business, Continuing Studies, Engineering, Humanities, Music, Natural Sciences and Social Sciences and is home to the Baker Institute for Public Policy. With 3,888 undergraduates and 2,610 graduate students, Rice’s undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio is just over 6-to-1. Its residential college system builds close-knit communities and lifelong friendships, just one reason why Rice is highly ranked for best quality of life by the Princeton Review and for best value among private universities by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance.
