first_imgNews March 11, 2009 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Help by sharing this information TurkeyEurope – Central Asia Journalists threatened with imprisonment under Turkey’s terrorism law News Reporters Without Borders deplores the arrest of Mustafa Balbay, Ankara bureau chief and columnist of the centre-left daily Cumhuriyet. After questioning him on 6 March, an Istanbul judge ordered his immediate detention on suspicion of supporting Ergenekon, an alleged clandestine network with links to the military and security forces that is accused of plotting against the current government. Balbay has been charged under article 309 of the criminal code with “trying to overthrow the constitutional order by force,” which carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.“There is so far no evidence for the charges against Balbay,” Reporters Without Borders said. “We call on the judicial authorities to conduct a proper investigation backed by solid evidence against him. In the meantime, we support the request for his conditional release which his lawyers submitted to the judge.”Balbay was arrested in Ankara and taken to the Istanbul prosecutor’s office for extensive questioning about the serious allegations. According to the 95-page transcript of the interrogation, he is accused of “attending secret meetings of the organisation Ergenekon” and “possessing secret documents.” Claiming there was sufficient evidence against him, the judge ordered him held in Istanbul’s Metris prison. He could be transferred in the next few days to Silivri prison, west of Istanbul, where all the other Ergenekon detainees are being held.So far a total of 86 people have been charged in connection with Ergenekon, an alleged ultra-nationalist secular conspiracy against the government led by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose ruling Justice and Development Party has Islamist roots. Of those charged, 41 are being held in Silivri prison. Trial hearings began in October 2008.Balbay was previously detained in July 2008 during a major police operation carried out in several cities. Admission to the museum is free on the Farmers’ Saturdays. Email the author There are different Sacred Harp songbooks but The B.F. White Sacred Harp, Revised Cooper Edition or the Cooper Book will be used on Saturday.“The Cooper Book is widely used in this area where there is a lot of interest in and participation in Sacred Harp Singing,” Greve said.Sacred Harp singing originated in the South in the early 1800s mainly Alabama, Georgia and the Carolinas. It is called shape note singing because the notes are four geometrical shapes and the shapes indicate their position and musical syllable.“This made reading music possible for those who had no musical training,” Greve said. “Sacred Harp singing is a kind of folk music and it’s a dying art form. It’s unique, too, in that there is no audience. The singers sit in a hollow square. The four sections are the tenors, basses, altos and trebles. You find the section that best suits your voice and join in.” The singers take turns leading. The leader stands in the center of the square and that’s the best seat in the house because the leader can hear all four sections, Greve said.Although there is no audience, as such, Greve said there will be room for those who just want to come and listen and, if they want to jump in, they are encouraged to do so.“Scared Harp singing has a unique and distinctive sound and the music is made by the instrument given by God, the human voice,” Greve said.Around 70 singers are expected to attend the Sacred Harp Singing, which is being organized by Ken Sundberg of Troy.“Dinner-on-the ground will be in the main building but visitors to the museum will be invited to explore the other museum buildings,” Greve said.  “Sacred Harp Singing is quite moving and, for those who have never heard it, Sacred Harp Singing is a unique experience. There will be materials available for those who want to know more about this form of folk music. If you enjoy music and learning more about old time music, then the Pioneer Museum is the place to be on Saturday.” By Health Videos Troy falls to No. 13 Clemson Book Nook to reopen Remember America’s heroes on Memorial Day Around the WebDoctor: Do This Immediately if You Have Diabetes (Watch)Health VideosIf You Have Ringing Ears Do This Immediately (Ends Tinnitus)Healthier LivingHave an Enlarged Prostate? For more free photos, visit our image library.)Khanyi MagubaneA recent survey by a top US travel magazine has revealed that American tourists rate Cape Town as their third favourite city in the world.Thousands of tourists participated in Travel + Leisure’s 2008 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey, which placed Bangkok, Thailand, as the top city to visit and Buenos Aires in Argentina as the second favourite. But numbers show that Cape Town in the Western Cape is not far behind. According to South African Tourism, in 2006 alone the province welcomed 145 211 visitors from the US. This was an increase of 19,64 % from the previous year. The Americans also voted Singita Boulders Lodge in the Sabi Sands game reserve, adjacent to the Kruger National Park, as the top hotel in the world. Cape Town’s Cape Grace Hotel was placed 22nd in the same category. As part of the poll, Travel + Leisure subscribers were invited to fill in a questionnaire and rate cities, hotels, islands, airlines, cruise lines, rental-car agencies, destination spas, hotel spas, tour operators and safari outfitters. The different cities included in the survey were rated on characteristics such as the different tourist sights on offer, cultural and art attractions, eateries and shopping opportunities, and value for money. The hotels were judged according to the rooms and facilities on offer, where they were situated as well as the restaurants and value of food offered by the establishment.Other winners in the survey included Singapore airlines as the world’s best international airline, New York as the best city in the US, Hertz as the best car-rental agency and the Galápagos Islands, Ecuador, as the world’s best islands to visit. All the 2008 winners in the different categories will be honoured at an awards luncheon in New York City on 24 July.Impressive growthTourism is booming not only in the Western Cape, but in the rest of South Africa too. This is in line with the global trend of all-round growth in the sector.Statistics released by South African Tourism indicate that foreign tourist arrivals in South Africa reached a record high of 7.4-million in 2006, which represents a 10.3% increase on 2004’s figures and exceeds the estimated 5.5% average global growth rate in tourism. This figure continued to climb as the number of foreign visitors in South Africa grew by 10% from January to May 2007. This positive trend is reflected in arrivals at airports, which increased by 4,4% during the first five months of 2007 compared with the same period in 2006.Useful linksSouth African TourismCape Town GovernmentTravel and leisure magazineSingita Game ReserveKruger National Parklast_img read more

first_imgPatriots defeat Rams in lowest-scoring Super Bowl ever “He’s a fighter, man, that kid,” Brady said. “I’m just so proud of him. He’s been an incredible player for this team in the playoffs and he just cemented himself, again, in the history of the NFL for what his accomplishments are.”Even when things weren’t working early for the Patriots, Edelman kept the offense going and the clock rolling as a safety valve for Brady. Eight of his catches were for first downs , including a 13-yard grab during the go-ahead touchdown drive with 7 minutes left in the game.“Julian always gives us those kinds of plays,” coach Bill Belichick said. “Tough plays, tough catches, catch-and-run plays, breaking tackles for a few extra yards. He did a tremendous job.”It has been a long journey back to this point for Edelman, who missed all of last season after tearing a knee ligament in New England’s third preseason game. ‘We are too hospitable,’ says Sotto amid SEA Games woes ‘We are too hospitable,’ says Sotto amid SEA Games woes MOST READ Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next SEA Games hosting troubles anger Duterte Don’t miss out on the latest news and information. The difference between the two sides was they put their opportunities away and we didn’t.“We were good in the first half and they scored against the run of play. It was very difficult towards the end when we were down to ten men, but certainly before that I thought we were always in the game.“It was a wonderful strike by Brooks for the first goal, but I thought we created really good chances of our own.“If you don’t put your chances away, then you know that a very good Bournemouth side that play with a lot of pace, with two players up front that run in behind, are going to cause you problems.“The chances are the pinnacle moments of any game, but on the balance of play, I thought we deserved more.”On Lewis Dunk’s dismissal, he added: “Initially we had no problems with it, we thought it was two yellow cards, but seeing them again, we feel that [Yves] Bissouma made the first contact, so there’s some doubt about who should have been booked.” last_img read more
