  • Reporter’s cryptic tweet about Cubs draft pick draws strong backlash

first_imgUSA Today reporter Bob Nightengale racked up hundreds of angry replies on a now-deleted tweet he sent out Wednesday night that some interpreted as offensive toward first-round Cubs draft pick Ed Howard.Nightengale, a veteran of the MLB beat, wrote: “The #Cubs draft Ed Howard, yes, showing action instead of hallow words.” Howard, picked No. 16 by the Cubs in the 2020 MLB Draft, is a high school shortstop from Illinois. While Chicago once appeared set in the middle infield for years to come, trades and lackluster performance beyond Javier Baez leaves a hole for a franchise-changing player to make a difference. As a high school grad, though, it might take a number of years for him to reach the big leagues.Below is a selection of responses to Nightengale’s tweet:ohhh no.— Mike Petriello (@mike_petriello) June 11, 2020pic.twitter.com/iukscQKrFf— Future Dodgers (@FutureDodgers) June 11, 2020Bro delete this lol— henry von thaden (@redsoxnstuff) June 11, 2020convinced bob nightengale is an algorithm unleashed on twitter as a social experiment— steve (@sschreiber13) June 11, 2020 The Cubs have been vocal leaders in support of the Black Lives Matter among MLB teams during a nationwide upwelling in anger over police brutality. Howard is black and outspoken about the need for baseball to revive its pipeline of black athletes. Many people, then, viewed Nightengale’s tweet as a suggestion the Cubs selected Howard because of his race. About 1,500 people were evacuated Sunday as the flames tore through brush and began jumping from rooftop to rooftop. Malibu Presbyterian Church was among the buildings destroyed. Among the homes destroyed was the Kashan Castle, also known as Hodge Castle, a 10,500- square-foot hilltop landmark built in 1978. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who declared a regional state of emergency because of the wildfires burning around the Southland, toured the area yesterday, and said significant progress had been made. He also said the firefight was smoother than the effort in 2003, when a fierce fire tore through more than 17,000 acres in Malibu, destroying more than 300 homes. Classes were canceled today at Pepperdine’s Malibu campus. City Hall was closed yesterday, and remained closed today to the public. However, city staff will be on hand to respond to urgent matters, the city reported. last_img read more

  • UCT voted Africa’s top business school

first_imgTamara O’ReillyThe MBA programme offered at the University of Cape Town is the only one on the continent to make the Financial Times’s Global Top 100 MBA list. For the fourth consecutive year the university’s Graduate School of Business (GSB) has joined prestigious names like Harvard Business School and Stanford University on the global MBA ranking by the renowned financial publication. In addition to this honour, the university’s GSB is considered the second best in the world in the “value-for-money” category, the criteria for which are calculated using the cost of the courses and the salary earned by alumni three years after graduation. Topping this category is the University of Strathclyde Business School in the UK.The Financial Times rankings assess schools in three main categories, namely the career progress of their alumni, the global focus and diversity of the school and its record in research and generating ideas.ProgressThe school has moved up the rankings from its entry into the list in 85th place in 2005 to the 71st spot this year. Despite this, salaries of graduates from this institution are the tenth highest in the world. It also emerged that the school ranks among the top five schools in emerging markets such as Africa, China and India.“We have about 26 global student exchange programmes as well as visiting academics from leading universities,” said director Professor Frank Horwitz. “The entire programme is structured with strong emphasis on personal development and growth, understanding business and leadership in emergent markets which puts us ahead of many other universities.”The GSB has also recently achieved a five-year re-accreditation by Equis, the European Quality stamp for international business schools. The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business claimed the number one spot for the fourth year in a row.Useful linksComplete listFinancial TimesUniversity of Cape Town UCT Graduate School of Businesslast_img read more

  • National body to tackle gender violence

first_img11 December 2012 South Africa brought its 16 Days of Activism campaign to a close on Monday with the launch of the National Council Against Gender-Based Violence, a 20-member body that will co-ordinate the country’s bid to end all forms of violence against women and children. The 20-member council was launched by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe at the closing event of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children campaign in Rustenburg, North West province on Monday. The council will facilitate the provision of help and response to victims and survivors of gender-based violence, adopt comprehensive measures to address violence against women and children, and coordinate the 365 Days National Plan of Action against Gender-Based Violence. The council will be chaired by the Deputy President, with a dedicated secretariat located in the Department of Women, Children and People with Disabilities. The establishment of the council was a major step that put South Africa on the right track to ending all forms of violence against women and children, said council member Advocate Pheagane Solomon Moreroa. “The council is specifically going to look into those issues relating to the violation of women and children rights and come up with relevant activities throughout the year. “We will also be able to implement those programmes supporting women and children who are being tortured and whose rights are being violated on a daily basis,” Moreroa said. “We are appealing to South Africans to work with us. This council will not achieve its objective without the support of society. “We also want to appeal to young South Africans to focus on their education and refrain from engaging on drug and alcohol abuse.” Motlanthe said the high rates of gender-based violence in South Africa were a clear indication that more needed to be done. He said every incident of abuse suffered by a woman or a child reflected the nation’s failure to respond to the cries of the vulnerable. Source: SANews.gov.zalast_img read more
